Pure Sleep

Pure Sleep is the brand name of a mouthpiece that is advertised as a cure for snoring. It is not advertised as a treatment for sleep apnea (treatments for that disorder cannot legally be sold over the counter), but reviews (and common sense) suggest that it might be useful for this as well, at least in milder forms. It fits over the lower teeth and pulls the lower jaw slightly forward, the idea being that this will open the breathing passages wider and prevent the tongue obstruction that causes snoring. Snoring is an audible symptom of a condition that, in its more severe manifestations, is called obstructive sleep apnea, in which breathing is interrupted during sleep and the sufferer half-wakens in order to resume breathing, resulting in interrupted sleep and failure to achieve deep sleep.

 

Pure Sleep Fitting Directions

The Pure Sleep mouthpiece comes with directions for custom-fitting to the individual user's mouth shape. The instructions call for brushing the teeth before the fitting process, and then dropping the mouthpiece into boiling water for one minute to render it pliable. Remove the mouthpiece with a slotted spoon, shake out excess water, and allow to cool for at least ten seconds but no more than twelve seconds. Insert the mouthpiece as directed and bite hard with the lower jaw thrust forward. Hold the bite for thirty seconds. Then remove the mouthpiece from the mouth and run it under cold water to set and harden. Make sure it fits your teeth after it completely cools. If not, the fitting process can be repeated.

Pure Sleep Reviews

Most reviews of the Pure Sleep mouthpiece seem to be positive. Complaints are usually concerned with the company's customer service, which is certainly a legitimate complaint but does not bear on the effectiveness of the product itself. Users and reviewers have also said that the device takes some getting used to and can result in drooling and also in trapped saliva that can generate a bad odor and taste in the morning. Reviewers have generally agreed that the device works to stop snoring and promote better sleep, however.

 

Pure Sleep In Stores

Unfortunately, it is not possible to buy the Pure Sleep product in stores. It must be ordered directly from the company. The price is rather steep: $59.90 plus $7.95 shipping, or a total of $67.85. The product comes with a thirty-day money-back guarantee, but getting the refund requires shipping the mouthpiece back to the company at the customer's expense.

 

Similar Devices

There are other devices on the market that are based on the same principle and seem to operate in the same general way. One such product, available direct from the company, is called SnoreMender. Unlike Pure Sleep, SnoreMender does not require fitting. Otherwise, it seems to be a similar product and sells for about the same price. Perhaps the most interesting such device is called Snore Eliminator. It's available from Amazon at less than half the price of Pure Sleep, but appears to be an identical product, using the same hot-water method to custom fit it to the individual's teeth and operating on the same principle. Amazon's advertised price for this product is $23.79. The list price of Snore Eliminator is over $70, so the reduced price may be due to Amazon's market leverage rather than some other factor.

AmbiScience Pure Sleep

Tesla Audio Sciences markets an auditory sleep aid under the brand name AmbiScience Pure Sleep that uses sound to help induce sleep. This is a completely different product from the Pure Sleep mouthpiece.
